I use #3 brass screws. I drill a pilot hole, start the screw, wicking a little CA on the threads, then screw it in till the about half the smooth part of the shank is in the wood. Then just nip off the head of the screw with my fret cutters and file flush.

Serge, I used aluminum rivots. I had several sizes laying around and they sanded nice. They show up nice in dim light rooms. Good Luck! Clinton

I think the coolest idea I've heard came from Mark Swanson: he uses brass (or perhaps aluminum) tubing into which he runs fiber optic cable. The cables all terminate at a single LED bulb, which shines into the fiber optic cable (this requires a pickup jack with a secondary pin). When plugged in, the little side dots light up, which is perfect--and cool--on a dark stage. One could also have the fret position markers done a similar way, so playing at night would be a snap. The effect would be like a lit runway.

I'm pretty sure that's not what you will use, Serge, but at least you can appreciate Mark's cleverness.

Steve

I made a choice with one of the suggestions here but won't tell nor show untill my gitter is completed in 2007, ok! Juuuust kidding, so many great tips but i have to choose so i will go with the one Tracy showed from Bashkin, i feel confident i can achieve something like this and it is really creative and different! Thanks Tracy!

I'm glad you liked it Serge, and I'm sure you will do a great job on this. Do I win the Tub of Lard?

I've never tried it, so I'm not sure how difficult it is. But it looks easy. I'll probably never try it since I know both Michael and Edward, and I don't want to bring them a guitar that looks like their own. But anyone else here is welcome to try this out. Good luck to you too Michael, I'm sure it will look really nice in ivory or bone. Even brass or aluminum will look good!

I've always just used 1/16" diameter brass wire or rod. Matches the frets. Happy Birthday Serge!!!

Robbie,
I'm going to his place tomorrow morning, I'll ask him what he uses.

Serge, Happy Birthday! I'm just 1/2 year behind you!

I saw Edward yesterday, and asked him what material he used in that picture, and it was fossilized walrus ivory. He said he uses bone too, or some wood is fine too. The way he does it, is he cuts many pieces and lays them on their side and either glues them down, or double stick tapes them to a flat board, then runs them through a thickness sander to get all of the widths the same width as the inlay bit. You will just need to gradually take it down on a thickness sander, or you could do each one seperately on sandpaper on plate glass of some other flat surface. He rounds the corners by hand until they fit.

After you get each piece thicknessed, you should leave them about 1/4" longer than necessary so this way as you round over the ends, if you mess up, you will have plenty of material to get it right. Hope this makes sense! Happy Belated Birthday Serge!
